Eligibility Criteria

Who can apply for a UWC scholarship?

Applicants to UWC who apply through UWC Ireland should comply with the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants should be 16, 17 or 18 years old on the 1st of September of the year they wish to enter a United World College. Do note though that some colleges may require additional information and potentially a background check for nominated candidates who are over 18 on 1st Sept.
  • Applicants should have completed their Junior Certificate examinations at the time of application. An equivalent state examination will be considered by UWC Ireland should the applicant meet the other eligibility criteria.
  • Successful applicants will be representing Ireland at United World Colleges. Therefore applicants should be an Irish citizen or have lived in the Ireland (including Northern Ireland) for at least 3 of the 5 years prior to applying.
  • Applicants selected for interview must be available physically in-person to attend the individual and group interviews. These are generally held in mid-Feb in Dublin, Ireland.

Special circumstances may apply to certain applicants and these will be taken into consideration by UWC Ireland. If an applicant is unsure of their status or has any queries about the eligibility criteria please contact us.

Note: In 2021 and 2022, due to the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, interviews were held virtually over Zoom in mid-February. The expectation is that this will go back to an in-person interview day in Dublin in 2023.

Applicants must not make more than one application to UWC concurrently. Making more than one application could result in a rejection of all applications.
